COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Glendale Community College will host its 60th anniversary festival—Great Glendale Get-Together—on Oct. 23, a free event held at the Student Union and lawn from 4 to 7:30 p.m. The celebration features a career fair, local vendors, food trucks, and outdoor activities, with $100 participation benefiting student scholarships and the emergency fund.  The Glendale Star

CULTURE NEWS

  • Machine Gun Kelly — joined by Wiz Khalifa — will launch his Lost Americana Tour at Desert Diamond Arena in Glendale on Nov. 18. Presale tickets open on Sept. 22 for Citi card members before general sales begin on Sept. 25.  The Arizona Republic

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Glendale city manager Kevin Phelps earns $376,044 in fiscal year 2024-25—making him the highest paid government worker in the Valley outside Phoenix. Fiscal data shows Phoenix city manager Jeffrey Barton and Executive Assistant Fire Chief Scott Walker earn more, while four police lieutenants earn between $393,514 and $423,642.  Glendale Independent

HEALTH NEWS

  • A support group for those battling sickle cell anemia has met for the past year in a side room at a downtown church—sparked by a summer seminar led by Rev. Marcia Garland. The group will continue meeting to offer support to individuals facing the disease.  Glendale Independent
  • NAMI Valley of the Sun will hold its annual NAMIWalks at 7677 W. Bethany Home Road in Glendale on Saturday, Oct. 11. Registration will start at 8 a.m. and the walk, set for 9 to 11:30, will offer free food, games & raffle prizes to boost mental health programs in Maricopa County.  Glendale Independent
  • Randy West and David Banks run Limbs for Humanity— a nonprofit that makes and refits prosthetic limbs from donated parts—helping amputees in Rocky Point and local communities regain mobility and return to work. Rotary International is building a new clinic in Rocky Point to speed up fabrication and serve more patients.  The Glendale Star

SPORTS NEWS

  • The San Francisco 49ers will try to contain Kyler Murray in their home opener against the Cardinals this Sunday—Brock Purdy remains a game-time decision due to a toe injury. The team plans to rush Murray as the Cardinals adjust after key cornerbacks were injured last week.  Glendale Independent
