Surprise-based WHAM Center for the Arts welcomed community leaders Roxy Garcia and Christina Panaitescu to its board on August 1 to expand its West Valley reach—Garcia is a specialist with Credit Union West and Panaitescu works with Goodyear, reinforcing the center's aim to make the arts accessible to all residents.

Powerful monsoon storms are moving through the Valley, dropping heavy rains, thunder, dust, and lightning that have knocked out power for about 4,300 customers and caused a ground stop at Phoenix Sky Harbor—outdoor plans may be further affected as the storms continue later in the week.

On Aug. 29 in Glendale, Cactus defeated Mountain Ridge after its defense forced a fumble and its offense scored on a 57-yard touchdown pass from senior Luke Berlin to senior Robert (Junior) Bell while senior linebacker Jayson Burkhard’s interception set up an eight-yard touchdown run by sophomore backup Myron Lee.
