- ➤ The Mountain Ridge High School community gathered Sunday night to pray for a 13-year-old who was hit by a vehicle Friday morning near 67th Avenue and Deer Valley Road in Glendale—he was riding an e-bike and was taken to the hospital in critical condition. ABC 15
CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ The West Valley Country Music Association’s 8th Annual Songwriting Contest is underway and invites songwriters to submit up to three songs by Sept 20 — entrants under 18 must have a parent or guardian sign. The top 15 finalists will perform at Glendale Main Library Auditorium on Oct 19 at 2 p.m., where music professionals will judge entries for cash prizes, plaques and a one-year membership in the Arizona Songwriters Association. - ➤ The westbound Loop 101 off-ramp at 67th Avenue closes for about two months starting at 11:30 p.m. today for reconstruction on the freeway widening project, while the on-ramp at 59th Avenue will close for two months beginning Aug. 11—drivers are advised to exit at 59th Avenue and use the frontage road. - ➤ Arizona Attorney General Kris Mayes will investigate Thin Blue Line Benefits Association after state regulators ordered a cease-and-desist for unlawfully providing insurance in Arizona, and the provider collected nearly $6 million from 4,682 members between January and June. Thin Blue Line Benefits Association must provide draft cancellation notices by Aug. 15 — a deadline that will force the provider to address alleged issues with its insurance offerings — as local retirees report being told they have unpaid medical bills. - ➤ The Arizona Department of Transportation warns that scam texts impersonating it are threatening drivers with unpaid traffic citations — the messages have wrong abbreviations, grammatical errors, and originate from outside the United States, so drivers should not click on any links and must delete them immediately.
